At Neighborhood Charter Schools we believe that each child can succeed at a high level. It takes a team of dedicated, smart, and relentless professionals to lead the way.

Our Approach

Mission

The mission of Neighborhood Charter Schools is to provide children with new educational opportunities through a rigorous, comprehensive K-8 program that cultivates the intellectual, social and emotional development of each child. Our school is an inclusive community that serves high-functioning children on the autism spectrum along with their neighborhood peers. Our students will become independent learners and critical thinkers, will acquire the academic skills they need to succeed in college preparatory high schools and will exhibit the social and emotional skills that will allow them to reach their full potential.

How We Are Different

At NCS, we begin with the core belief that disability does not mean inability, and we are committed to helping all students, including those with special needs, tackle challenging academic work and meet sky-high expectations. Our holistic approach sees children as individuals with unique needs and talents and recognizes that children learn best when their individual needs are met.

We recognize that children learn best when they are engaged in learning experiences that are meaningful and enjoyable. It encourages students to explore their interests and express themselves in multiple ways. NCS emphasizes the importance of the environment and community, and we strive to help students become responsible citizens.

School Culture

Mentor Program

At Neighborhood Charter Schools, we are committed to ensuring the success of every new teacher. As part of our program, teachers will have the opportunity to partner with veteran colleagues as they navigate the challenges and steep learning curve of their early career. We firmly believe in the principles of career-long development, responsive support tailored to each teacher’s needs, and the power of collaborative learning environments. Our mentors play a crucial role in helping new teachers enhance their planning, instruction, content knowledge, and classroom management. We encourage experienced teachers who have received the highest ratings from both administration and colleagues to apply to become a mentor.

Curriculum

Our Curriculum Design Team at NCS goes beyond providing curriculum materials for teachers. We actively support and develop educators by conducting monthly meetings to ensure they are well-prepared for teaching. Additionally, we offer year-round professional development opportunities to enhance their content knowledge and sharpen their skills in analyzing scholar work.

Co-Teaching model:
A co-teaching model in a classroom of about 22 scholars offers a multitude of benefits. With two educators, scholars benefit from more personalized attention and tailored instruction, as teachers can cater to diverse learning needs effectively. This approach also fosters a collaborative teaching environment, where educators can share expertise, reduce individual workloads, and improve classroom management. Ultimately, co-teaching enriches the learning experience, providing scholars with the opportunity to excel academically and develop essential life skills within a supportive and inclusive classroom setting.

Bridge Support:
The BRIDGE program at NCS offers a valuable opportunity to enhance your teaching and benefit your scholars. This program is designed to address the unique needs of students who need extra instructional support, providing them with individualized and foundational help while still being part of an inclusive classroom environment. As a General Studies teacher, you can collaborate with our experienced BRIDGE teachers who are skilled in using different programs and modalities to address foundational skills and grade-level standards, filling knowledge gaps and building students’ access to core content.

Professional Development

Coaching: At NCS, our commitment to teacher development is unwavering. We believe in continuous professional growth, and it’s not just a catchphrase; it’s a way of life at our school. Our teachers benefit from a constant stream of professional development opportunities, covering a wide range of topics, from curriculum enhancements to special education strategies and even culture and parent engagement training. With our open-door policy, you can explore your professional interests and always find someone willing to support your development.

Feedback is another cornerstone of our approach. Our dedicated team of coaches and school leadership is always there to guide and inspire you to reach the next level in your teaching journey. Our feedback culture is built on constructive conversations aimed at helping you excel in both teaching and learning. We are a supportive and growth-focused environment that will empower you to become the best teacher you can be. Your success is our priority!
