Social-Emotional Learning
Fall 2020 Plan for Remote Learning
One of the hallmarks of Neighborhood Charter Schools is the support we provide to students socially and emotionally. In the Spring of 2020, we were able to carry this over to the online world. 85% of families were satisfied with what we were able to provide socially and emotionally to students remotely.
We believe deeply in teacher and student relationships and so at the start of the year teachers will intentionally use strategies to build relationships with students and create a sense of community with their new classmates. Teachers integrate strategies that build community and skills in social-emotional growth throughout the day. Our staff are trained in Social Thinking, a way of using language that promotes students to think about themselves and other’s feelings in social situations and respond appropriately in social settings.
We also have set times where teachers and students are able to focus on social-emotional growth and community. In lower grades, this happens during community circle, and in our Middle School students attend a group called LIGHT Squad. LIGHT Squad consists of a small group of students across the grade and a teacher leader. The teacher directly teaches social skills or the group acts as a peer support group for students in Middle School.
Additionally, we have a collaborative team to inform our school counseling plan. We have a social worker, two school counselors, a behavior specialist, and our SpEd Director executing, monitoring, evaluating, and revising our program based on feedback from students, families, and staff.
